Haribo has issued a nationwide recall in the Netherlands after several people reported falling ill from eating its popular Happy Cola F!ZZ gummies—only to later discover the candies were laced with cannabis.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) confirmed that tests on the gummies found traces of cannabis in at least three packages. The contamination was first reported by multiple members of a single family who experienced dizziness after consuming the sweets.
Authorities are urging consumers not to eat the affected product. While only one batch is believed to be tainted, Haribo has taken the precaution of pulling its entire stock from shelves across the country. The recall includes all Happy Cola F!ZZ bags with a best-before date of January 2026.
Haribo is cooperating with Dutch police to investigate how the cannabis ended up in the product. The company emphasized that the issue appears to be isolated to the Netherlands and that products in other countries, including the United States, are unaffected.
“The safety of our consumers is our highest priority and Haribo takes this incident very seriously,” the company said in a statement, confirming it will provide full refunds for any returned products.
Officials have not confirmed how many people became sick, but noted that the contamination does not appear to involve any other Haribo products.
